How Remote Phosphor LEDs Outshine Traditional LEDs

Traditional LED fixtures have been a major game changer in the lighting industry when compared to traditional lighting technologies; incandescent, fluorescent & HID. Unlike these traditional lighting technologies, LEDs do not generate as much heat, they last up to five times longer than traditional lighting, and do not contain any mercury.

LED lighting offers many benefits when compared to these traditional lighting methods, but Horner has been exploring and pushing the boundaries of technological innovation of LED fixtures.

Horner believes that remote phosphor technology is able to break past even more barriers by removing the phosphor from the LED itself and relocating it. Lighting fixtures with remote phosphor technology usually consist of an LED board with royal blue LEDs, a remote phosphor element, and a mixing chamber. Here are some of the benefits of this in comparison to Traditional LED.

1. Higher Efficacy:

The configuration of our remote phosphor LEDs efficiently creates more appealing lighting conditions. Compared to traditional LEDs, remote phosphor LEDs have been seen to maintain around 24% efficacy, whereas with Horner’s remote phosphor linear high bay lighting, there can be up to 30% overall higher system efficacy than traditional LEDs

2. Even Light Distribution:

Traditional LED lighting has an unfortunate reputation for being cold and harsh. They either need to have a secondary optic or a 3D reflector arrangement in order to reach their desired distribution – leading to more cost. Unlike traditional LEDs, remote phosphor lighting removes the need for a secondary optic to succeed in desired light distribution. Even when lights are dimmed, LED remote phosphor provides smooth light output.

3. Longer Life:

For Traditional LEDs, the typical rated life can heavily change over time. Incandescent light sources can last from 750-2,000 hours, compact fluorescents can last from 8,000-10,000 hours, and high-powered white LEDs have an estimated useful lifetime of 35,000-50,000 hours. However, with remote phosphor lighting, Horner has seen 96,000 hours @ L90 or 2-3 times that amount in most products.

4. Energy Efficiency:

By nature, LED lights and remote phosphor lights are eco-friendly. With locally sourced and recycled materials, our linear lighting works toward saving in cost and energy usage. Traditional LEDs are 90% more efficient than incandescent bulbs. However, with remote phosphor, they can be 20-30% more energy efficient than traditional LEDs.

Traditional white LEDs are a great alternative to incandescent, fluorescent, and HID Lighting, but they can’t hold a candle to Horner’s remote phosphor LEDs. With higher efficacy, even light distribution, extended lifetime, and outstanding energy efficiency, remote phosphor LEDs provide the greatest value in today’s lighting technology. All of these great benefits lead to lower costs and a better lighting experience, indoors or out.
